Intent

At Southwark, we want our pupils to overcome the barriers that they face in order to prepare them for life today and in the future. We are eager for pupils to understand their self value within society so that they can effectively contribute to make a difference in their own lives and that of others.

This will be achieved by:

  • Equipping pupils with resilience to overcome the barriers they face; poverties in language, finance, experience and aspiration.
  • Helping children to become determined to achieve and aspire to be ‘anything’ and ‘anyone,’ regardless of their start in life and their barriers;
  • Developing pupils’ curiosity about themselves and others, empowering them with the knowledge and skills to challenge, question, share and appreciate other’s views and opinions;
  • Insisting that pupils are respectful of themselves, others and the world around them.

At Southwark, we follow the SCARF programme of learning in PSHE.  SCARF represents the key values of: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship.  This progressive programme of learning provides a whole-school approach to building these essential foundations – crucial for children to achieve their best, academically and socially.

PSHE Progression at Southwark

Children at Southwark learn about six key areas of PSHE.  These are:

  • Me and My Relationships
  • Valuing Difference
  • Keeping Myself Safe
  • Rights and Responsibilities
  • Being My Best
  • Growing and Changing

Each year, children will build upon prior knowledge and deepen their understanding of each area of learning appropriate to their stage in life and changes they will experience.
